At the 2026 World Climbing Series Chamonix in France on Sunday (July 12th), Indonesian athletes swept to a stellar victory, winning two gold medals and one silver in the speed event.
This brilliant result further confirms Indonesia’s position as a global powerhouse in speed climbing. In fact, the men’s final featured a match between two Indonesian athletes who both performed impressively throughout the competition.
Urge Made Rita to Return to the Top of the Podium
Desak Made Rita Kusuma Dewi won the first gold medal in the women’s speed event. The Balinese athlete continued her consistent form, having previously won gold at the World Climbing Series in Krakow, Poland.
In the final, Desak managed to beat the Italian representative, Giulia Randi , with a time of 6.22 seconds , ahead of her opponent who recorded a time of 6.51 seconds .
This success demonstrates Desak’s continued excellence at the world level. After the match, he expressed his gratitude for winning another gold medal for Indonesia.
According to him, the main focus during the competition was to give the best performance to bring honor to the nation.
Men’s Final Goes to Indonesia
Indonesia’s dominance was further enhanced in the men’s speed event. Two Indonesian athletes, Veddriq Leonardo and Antasyafi Robby Al Hilmi , advanced to the final, ensuring Indonesia took home gold and silver.
In a duel between Indonesian representatives, Veddriq emerged as the champion after recording a time of 4.89 seconds , while Robby had to be satisfied with winning the silver medal with a time of 5.11 seconds .
Meanwhile, the bronze medal went to Japanese athlete, Ryo Omasa , who narrowly beat Chinese representative, Yicheng Zhao , in the fight for third place.
Veddriq’s First Gold Since the Olympics
For Veddriq Leonardo, the victory in Chamonix held special significance. This gold medal marked his first World Climbing Series title since his Olympic gold medal.
He admitted that he was grateful to be able to stand on the highest podium again even though his preparations had not been going optimally in recent times.
According to Veddriq, the hard work and support of the coaching team and the Indonesian people are the main motivation to once again achieve the best results in the international arena.
Coach Appreciates Athlete’s Struggle
Indonesia’s assistant speed coach, Fitriyani , also expressed her appreciation for the performance of all the athletes. She explained that after competing in Krakow, the team did not undergo a special training program and simply adjusted to their condition upon arrival in Chamonix.
Despite facing various limitations, the athletes were able to show their best performance and bring home proud results.
