PrakarsaWarga.Com – Pasar Jaya Implements Mandatory Waste Sorting in 146 Markets Starting in August 2026, Supporting Jakarta’s Transformation into a Global City
Jakarta – Perumda Pasar Jaya will begin implementing a mandatory waste sorting policy in all markets it manages starting in August 2026. This program is a strategic step in creating cleaner, healthier, and more comfortable markets while also supporting Jakarta’s vision as a global city.
The President Director of Perumda Pasar Jaya, Agus Himawan, said that the waste sorting movement is not just a symbolic activity, but a real commitment to changing the culture of waste management in the market environment.
He believes that markets play a crucial role as one of the largest waste producers, so management must begin at the source. This way, the volume of waste sent to landfills can be significantly reduced.
As a form of preparedness, Perumda Pasar Jaya has provided separate waste bins in the 146 markets under its management. These facilities are expected to make it easier for vendors and visitors to separate waste by type from the outset.
This policy is a follow-up to Jakarta Governor’s Instruction No. 5 of 2026 concerning the Waste Sorting and Management Movement at Source. The Jakarta Provincial Government is also pushing for changes to the waste management system so that it no longer relies solely on downstream disposal.
This step is all the more crucial because Jakarta is targeted to stop conventional waste disposal at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) by August 2026. Therefore, all parties, including market managers, are urged to actively separate waste from its source.
To support the program’s implementation, Pasar Jaya has implemented a pilot project for independent waste management at Kramat Jati Main Market in collaboration with LAPI ITB and PT FDR. This program is expected to become a model for waste management that can be implemented in other markets.
In addition, Perumda Pasar Jaya has formed a GEBER Task Force (Satgas) consisting of 58 personnel. This team is tasked with monitoring, educating vendors and visitors, and ensuring the consistent implementation of the waste sorting program.
Through this policy, Perumda Pasar Jaya hopes to create a new culture of more responsible waste management, so that traditional markets in Jakarta will be cleaner, healthier, and able to support the realization of the capital as a sustainable global city.
